Nursery Schools in Slums in Backward Areas in & Around Mumbai

BACKGROUND

MESCO or Modern Educational Social & Cultural Organization has been working with the poorer sections of society. Its emphasis is on providing quality education to the underprivileged sections of society. It has been providing, indirect support for education i.e. financial assistance to students from school to professional levels on a continuing multiyear basis as also direct education through the management of a primary school and 12 Nursery Schools, catering to over 550 students.

It has over the years been able to improve the quality of its curriculum as also able to recruit better trained teachers whom it is able to retain because it believes in low student:teacher ratio, ongoing teacher training, conducive service conditions, attractive pay package and a participative management style of functioning.

Except one NURSERY SCHOOL, 11 Nursery Schools are being run in community halls or private ownership premises and MESCO enters into an annual (eleven months leave and licence) contract.

An interesting child centred play way and experiential approach is adopted in terms of the curriculum. A lot of materials, games, and other educational aids are used. Help from experts and institutions involved in child centred early childhood education is taken in the conduct of workshops and training programmes for the teachers.

While all children enter the next level more than 75% of children from our Nursery Schools, each year are getting into reputed schools of the area. This to us is the greatest achievement; for MESCO, each year, is able to put over 350 students into good schools.

MESCO believes that even in slums and backward areas parents do perceive and realise what is being provided in terms of quality of education and are willing to pay upto their means and ability. It has been MESCO's endeavour to see that nobody is denied education because of their inability to pay and subsidised tuition fees are then charged from such students, on an already highly subsidised fee structure (covers only 60% of costs).

We at MESCO appeal to you to support us in any one or more of the following ways:

1. Paying us a donation amount to be set aside as a Corpus to take care of the deficit (Rs. 60,000/- covered by a corpus of Rs. 5.0 lakhs per school); or, an annual contribution of Rs. 60,000/-.

2. Paying for educational material approximate cost Rs. 10,000/- per school, annually.

3. Paying for capital expenditure in terms of furniture and play equipment; estimated one time cost Rs. 50,000/- for setting up a new school.

We, at MESCO request to all our brothers and sisters all over the world to assist us by giving us DONATION for the conduct of our programmes.
